Lyndsay Pearson has written a new blog post about TS3 to
TheSims3.com (direct link to the blog post, btw)It's all about new wishes TS3 has. Some pointers:
* there will be wishes instead of wants, you can promise to fulfill a certain wish and after successfully finished, your sim will be granted 'Lifetime Happiness Points'.
* with these happiness points you can buy achievement traits
* traits will be advantages for your sim and will help their everyday life, like steel bladder or cheaper shopping etc.
* the most interesting trait mentioned to me was mid-life crisis, not sure how it works but as long as there will be element of surprise, I'm content

We’ve looked back on our experience with Wants from The Sims 2, and think that you’ll find the Wish gameplay feels really different and better than Wants. You’re now free to pick or ignore your Sims’ wishes without fear of some sort of mental breakdown.
I actually will be disappointed if there is no mental breakdown or even something similar. I get the feeling that people at EA are trying to make TS3 as easy as possible. There hasn't been anything about how challenging the game can be. I like the fact that you can concentrate on story telling, but I've never been good at telling stories, I like to make goals for my sims and achieve them. If there's no negative side effect not to achieve a goal, I kind of don't see why bother, so to speak.
